Hot Tub Maintenance

If you have a hot tub, one of the most important things that you must make sure that you do is make sure that you do maintenance on it. If the water in the hot tub is not treated and stored the right way it can breed microorganisms. In addition, not cleaning the hot tub would not make it very hygienic.

It is very important that you change the water at least every sixty to ninety days, sooner if it appears to be dirty. When you change the water you do not just empty it out and refill it with clean water. There are certain things that have to be done between the emptying and refilling. Once you have it emptied out you need to remove the filter,. Then to clean out the bacteria you need to put in a chemical plumbing flushing agent.

Once the water is out you need to clean the interior of the hot tub with a surface cleaner that is non-foaming. You also need to make sure that you clean the covering for the hot tub too. The next thing that you need to do is make sure that the filter is clean before you put it back in its place. If the filter is old you may need to totally replace it. Once you have the filter back in place it is time to refill your hot tub.

If the covering is going to be exposed to sunlight make sure that you use something on it to protect it from the UV rays. This needs to be done in addition to the daily and weekly things that you have to do for the hot tub.

In addition to doing the correct water treatment you also need to make sure that your hot tub is sanitized. There are maintenance chemicals that you can get especially for hot tubs to use in the sanitation part. The two main chemicals used are bromine and chlorine.

The bromine levels should be three to six mg/l and you can get them in a tablet form. The chlorine is available in granular form so it will dissolve quickly in the water. Make sure the chlorine is in the three to five mg/l range. For a monthly treatment it is good to oxidize the hot tub using non-chlorine shock. By using this treatment you can get rid of perspiration odors, body oils, and cosmetics. You will also need to check the alkali and acid levels of the water and a classifier to help keep the water clear.
