The Importance of Emergency Preparedness

Keeping your family safe is the most important role that you have in life.  Because of this, people across the country invest their money in elaborate security systems as well as home, life, and car insurance.

However, what people don’t realize is they are still not safe from the elements that surround them.  Even though people may believe that insurance and security systems will keep them safe, they are still vulnerable to the power of nature.

Disaster hits when you least expect it, so don’t be caught off guard and prepare now instead.  In 2007 alone, there were 63 natural disasters reported in the United States, and you never know where they will hit next.

Natural disasters are a huge contributor to annual deaths and injuries in the United States.  Just in the first six months of the year 2011, there have been 98 natural disasters—double the average of disasters in the 1990s.

Anywhere you live in the world, you are subject to a disaster at any time.  Whether it is an earthquake, tornado, flood, fire, or even a terrorist attack, an emergency can be around any corner.

Because of this, people need to stop living in ignorance and start facing the truth.  Instead of pretending that the danger isn’t there, they need to prepare for the worst, and then they are free to hope for the best.

Every state can literally have any and every kind of disaster occur.  For example, just this year Tulsa, Oklahoma experienced their biggest blizzard in decades, one of the largest earthquakes in state history, a record-setting drought, many deadly tornadoes, and deadly flooding.

Because of this, water damage in Tulsa is a huge issue.  However, there are disaster recovery services available that help with this problem.

The first step to preparing for safety is to start storing food.  Every home should have at least a year’s supply at hand so they won’t starve in the event where grocery stores shut down and the neighborhoods are in chaos.

You can never be too prepared, because you never know how many people will be underprepared and need assistance.  Often times in emergency situations emergency personnel isn’t available to everyone because of the number of people who need assistance, so it’s is always best to be independent and not rely on their help.

In addition to food storage, one of the most important things to invest in is an emergency survival kit.  These can be found anywhere online, and are surprisingly cheap if you think of them in terms of life-saving equipment.

Survival kits can be found online, and they usually range in price from about $20-$130 depending on their size and function.  Although they are on the pricy side, they are essentials that could save a life.

Each survival kit includes items for shelter or warmth, health and first aid, food and water, signaling and navigating, and other multipurpose tools or materials.  Make sure that your kit can sustain your family’s needs for at least a month.

Also, make sure that there is a survival kit in your home, office, and school.  You never know where you will be or what you will be doing when a natural disaster occurs.

The second step to preparedness is making an emergency plan.  In the time of an emergency, always have a plan or a meeting spot for you and your loved ones.

Schools do an excellent job at this.  Fire drills, earthquake drills, and other disaster drills are done annually for these safety reasons.

However, all too often we forget to also have drills in our homes and work places, which I think is a positive idea that could help prevent injury and possibly death.  Next time you are at home or in the office, suggest a disaster drill.

Staying informed about disaster preparedness news is also very important to you and your family’s safety.  Always remain current on issues concerning predicted disasters or weather patterns, so that you will be watching for it before it comes, therefore even more prepared.

By being prepared for a disaster you won’t have to be taken by surprise when a crisis comes your way.  You will be able to handle the situation calmly and minimize the amount of danger to you and your family.

If you are prepared, then everything that is important to you, such as your family and loved ones, will remain safe.  Instead, all you will have to worry about is the ruins and the fire damage, and it’s just a house anyways.  The safety of your family should mean much more.
