The Importance of Using the Right Resume Format

There are two types of resume format that is generally followed by applicants to serve as guide in the composition of their resume. Following a particular format will make it easier for the applicant to create a structure for the content. The suitability of a resume format should be studied by the applicant first in accordance to what he thinks will work to his advantage. The format apt for someone who has just freshly graduated from college may be different from that of someone who has had a lengthy experience in the corporate arena. The Internet can provide the applicant ideas on how to create a resume if only he takes to time to search for a good guide. Some sources would say that fresh graduates are more apt to use the reverse chronological format because it will basically showcase an applicant’s trainings, experience, and educational accomplishments while others say that this will not work for fresh graduates because it will only emphasize the candidate’s lack of experience which companies normally look for. A reverse chronological format lays out the trainings and work experience he has attended from the oldest to the most recent. It will also show the kind of educational training that he has because for most companies, one’s educational background has a large influence on how the company will perceive the candidate’s contribution to the company. For professionals, on the other hand, a reverse chronological format can be beneficial to him if he wishes to let the company that he is applying for know that he values tenure in a company or make the employer aware of the depth of his expertise in a particular field. This can be his asset to give emphasis on his value as a professional employee. One’s tenure can tell so many positive things about an employee. The use of a functional format, on the other hand, will also benefit a candidate who has good credentials to boast. This format will drill down the applicant’s specific skills and the tasks performed which will fortify the confidence of the employer in what the applicant has to offer. This type of format will be very good at disguising the fact that the applicant has not advanced in his prior field. If the case is that the applicant really wants to advance in his career, the applicant can use this if he wants to try out a different industry. Nevertheless, this will disguise any negative perception if the applicant has hopped from a lot of different jobs as this will only highlight his skills if written properly. Through this, the applicant can stitch all his job experiences together and emphasize on how he can be of an asset to the company.  Although, he has to be careful in choosing this type of format so that it does not create a wrong impression. The applicant must make it a point that the employer will only see the positive aspect of the applicant’s reason for hopping from one job to another and the good result that has emerged from the various experiences that he has had.

If deemed necessary, the applicant has the option to combine the two types of format so that he can further emphasize his skills and deviate from any negative impression. His resume can cite the levels of difficulty that he has encountered in the tasks assigned to him but he has to make sure that his citations will come out with a positive feel.

The main objective of choosing the right resume format is to downplay any weakness or work gap that may cause doubt on the potential of a candidate, but most importantly, a good resume should be able to highlight the positive attributes and credentials of the job candidate.
