What types of foods make healthy snacks?

If you have chronic health problems such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, you may think that it is difficult to find appropriate snacks.  For patients with these health conditions, it may be a challenge to find tasty snacks that are low in fats, salt and sugar.  Most commercially prepared snack items are not targeted at these types of patients and they are high in all the wrong types of foods.  If you are looking for some healthier choices for snacks, try some of these great foods!

  • Popcorn:  Home popped popcorn can be very healthy!  This snack is high in fiber, low in calories and contains only the fat and salt that you add.  If you make this snack at home, you are in control of how good or bad this food is for you.  Try to avoid excessive amounts of butter and salt when you make this food.  Its high fiber content and low sugar contact make perfect low carbohydrate diabetic snacks!
  • Veggies and low fat dip:  Raw vegetables are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and fiber.  These foods are low in calories and do not raise blood sugar levels dramatically.  These foods can be eaten plain or paired with a low calorie, low fat vegetable dip.  For the healthiest choice in dip, make your own with fat free sour cream and fresh herbs.  By making your own dip, you are in control of the types of additives and sodium content.  Even if you make your own dip, be sure not to go overboard using it as the calories can add up!
  • Low Fat Yogurt:  Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium.  Look for varieties that are low in fat and do not contain added sugars.  Greek yogurt is a good choice for most people.

By making proper food choices it is possible to improve high blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and improve blood sugar readings.  By controlling chronic health conditions you will reduce your risk of complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and foot conditions that require the use of a special orthopedic shoe for women.
