So, you’ve discovered that Facebook is blocked? The horror! Luckily, it is possible to get around the internet filters and get on Facebook anyway.
At school, everyone incessantly wants to boss you around. Your parents and teachers are insisting on what you must write, which friends you can be friends with, what you should wear, and even what you must eat. It’s a long list. It’s a lot like you’re considered to be a felon or something. You’d think that while pressuring you to endure class and all that stuff, they’d at least let you browse any sites you need to as long as you’re stuck there. But, no. The interwebs are censored, and a good deal of websites are being blocked. However, there are many ways to go past that, and it’s very much easier than getting your parents to homeschool you.
The easiest way to get access to Facebook at school is to use a proxy. You can get onto any other blocked site by using this method. You can find lists of proxies right at the end of this page.
Proxies are like a gateway that pass information between the computer you’re on and the site you’re visiting. The proxy visits the site you want instead of you, downloads the page, and sends it off to you. So the site you’re trying to visit never sees your IP. So in effect you are browsing sites in an indirect manner. School firewalls only think you are visiting the proxy, not the real site.
The trick is to find a proxy site that isn’t well-known. Popular proxies will get discovered and blocked sooner. Proxies that you find by internet searches will be blocked quickly because teachers can find them so easily. Even if you find a good one it’s a good idea to have an alternative you can use if it gets blocked.
Another method to unblock Facebook at school is by setting up your own proxy site. This is more complicated than using a proxy but better in the long run because you’re in control. How to do this is beyond the scope of this article, if you search for “How to make your own proxy” you should find some guides. You can even earn money from your proxy by letting people advertise on it.
Other ways to access Facebook are to use sites that translate pages, like Google Translate or Babelfish. Also try using Google’s cache version of the site. Unfortunately, it won’t let you log in using these methods, so it’s still better to use a proxy for Facebook, however these tricks are good with most other sites.
